Ed Eyestone Running highlightsNCAA cross-country 5000-meter and 10000-meter champion his senior year at BYU; set NCAA 10000-meter record (since broken) of 27:411 in 1985; two-time Olympian in 1988 and 1992
As an undergraduate at BYU in the early 1980s Eyestone aspired to coach at the collegiate level The 10-time All-American returned to BYU as head cross-country and track coach in 2000 after two and a half years as an assistant at Weber State University
But Eyestone worried about expectations "Just because one has been an athlete doesnt mean [hell] be a good coach" he says
Eyestone also found that during his absence the track program had shifted from a distance emphasis toward more of a sprint orientation So the new coach focused on recruiting to re-establish BYUs distance tradition
Coaching accomplishmentsThe Cougar mens cross-country team is regularly ranked in the top 10 and has qualified for nationals all 16 years Eyestone has been at the helm Josh Rohatinsky was crowned individual champion in 2005 Eyestone also coaches several BYU graduates including Jared Ward and Jason Witt
D?j? vu moment"We go to the Mt SAC Relays every year and thats where I ran 27:41 for 10000 back in 1985 Its an evening meet and every year its the samethe sun goes down and it gets totally still really good conditions and theyve got the flame going in the little cauldron Its special and it brings back the memories of that 1985 race"
